Austin Fire Code has changed.
Do you need a new fence?
As of 2024, Austin’s fire code now requires all new fences within wildfire-prone areas to be built with non-combustible or fire-resistant materials.
Austin’s updated Wildland-Urban Interface Code (effective July 2025) requires that new fences within 10 feet of a building be made of ignition-resistant materials. The rule applies to new construction, remodels, and additions—not to existing fences. If a new building is placed next to a non-compliant fence, either the fence must be upgraded or the building’s wall and eaves must meet stricter fire-resistant standards. The goal is to reduce wildfire risks by keeping combustible materials out of the ember ignition zone.
